I bought the unit and almost returned it.
Pros:
-Portable..., way faster than a flat bed. I scanned all the photos I felt worth in four nights of TV. I could easily see taking this to some relatives, friend and family from WAY BACK and scanning some of their photos during the visit.
-Easy conversion form the memory over to the PC. 1GB memory meant I only had to clear the memory twice for over 1500 photos.
Cons:
Ask your self... what are you going to do with the photos you scan? Save them to show the kids some day or drop them to a digital picture frame? Then you will likely be OK to satisfied with this scanner. Photo reprints will have the dust and line problems.
-I did have the lines show up. See other reviews. Not horrible. Easy enough to touch up with a secondary program. The cleaning cloth has not removed the the lines; you can scan the photo two times and slightly adjust or 180 degree rotate the photo and the line will show up else where and then you cut paste to fix between the two... a hassle and only recommended for lines that cut across the eyes other wise the lines are light enough to not detract too much from the pictures. No disaembly option to clean. The self cleaning needs improved.
-I had tiny dust artifacts show up... no D.I.C.E (Google it) (Digital ICE to remove dust)
-The scanning sheaths are not sold by Pan digital nor are new cleaning kits, but they will send you a replacement cleaning kit free of charge. (Not sure how many or how long that will last but I looked everywhere for replacements online. ) My sheath developed scratches after 100 photos that showed up on each photo. You really only need the sheath for old photos with glue or dog-eared corners.
-The cost of an online service for 1000 photos is about the same as this unit. (return shipping included) They have the dust removal tools usually built in. But you might not be able to take photos out of your great aunts house to scan your grandfathers old photos.
-No negative scanning ability. (they sell another but you can only do 4" wide with their negative scanner combo unit.
-No auto feed. You run it one at a time about 10-15 sec each.
-Paid under $100.

I purchased the scanner to save old family photos. I did a lot of research on which scanner to buy and so far I'm extreamly happy with this one. I haven't experienced any "white lines" like some have.
I would recommend with older photos, not scanning them at the highest resolution (600 psi) - it just makes the picture grainy. The Pandigital has the option of lowering/increasing the resolution which some photo scanners do not.

I love this scanner. It's super portable and compact. It's also really easy to use, and produces good quality pictures for the size/price of this scanner. I haven't used the picture "covers" that come with the scanner, and my pictures turned out just fine. I have a Mac, so it's not possible for the scanner to be plugged in directly to the computer (which you can do with a regular PC). So I have to save the pics to the card, and then put the card directly into the computer and go from there. It's nice that it automatically saves pictures at jpegs and not PDFs, and there's not a lot of cropping that needs to be done. All in all, I'm very happy with the purchase and would recommend this product.

I am very pleased with the scanner. It delivered on all promises. If it would copy 8X10 photos, I would be even more pleased. I have scanned almost 1000 pictures and had no problems.
